Pinchas Lavon (1904-1976) was a Zionist activist, and the founder of the Gordonia pioneering youth movement. He immigrated to Israel on 1929, and became one of the leaders of the Social-Democrat party. After the establishment of the state of Israel he served as a member of parliament and held several ministerial positions. He was the second defense minister of the country, but resigned his position after being accused of ordering terrorist activities in Egypt. From 1956 through 1961 Lavon was the Chairman of the Israeli Trade Unions (The Histadrut). During the early 1960, Lavon uncovered a plot to frame him with connection to the Egyptian scandal, and consequently demanded that he will be publicly exonerated. A series of investigations proved that Lavon had no knowledge of the events in Egypt. However, the so-called Lavon affair became a political issue, and Lavon was forced to resign, thus ending his political career. |
