PRESENCES (1987-88)

Presences is a series of 30 unique images created in 1987, exploring life's interconnectedness and the essence of being. The works engage with the elemental forces of earth, sun, sea, and sky, focusing on the relationships between these natural elements and between individuals and their surroundings. The series reflects the balance of individuality within unity, inviting growth through equal, harmonious relationships.

The series includes the print Sail Fills (also referred to as Rave), which was selected from the Presences collection and editioned in 1988. This work, limited to an edition of 18 prints, stands apart, offering a focused interpretation of the broader series.

Elstein states:
Presences is about all seas, all skies, all sunlight, all relationships, beyond man and woman to all relationships. Through equal relationships - growth is possible. I am looking for simultaneity, individuality in unity. The design is always consequential to meaning. The more one takes from the bread of life, the more there is. It is the never-ending mother which is the universal seed; earth, sun, sea and sky.

Also included in this collection is Rhapsody, a separate body of work comprising three variations: RhapsodyRhapsody II, and Rhapsody III. Each is a unique piece, exploring similar themes of interconnectedness and the dynamic nature of relationships, but not part of any edition.

The names of the individual works within Presences encapsulate the multi-layered concepts of the series. Titles such as Together and Over the MoonThe Sky’s the LimitSea Moon Meeting II, and Joy Moon Meeting reflect Elstein’s deep fascination with the natural world and the interconnectedness of all relationships.
